Every time Google releases a new product the entire news and blogosphere is set aflame. This time Google is testing a limited release, limited function, limited size spreadsheet which everyone seems determined to compare to Excel.

I have used it to collaborate on my wedding coming up. The interface is smooth, and *some* of the functions are there. I can't imagine that v.01 is going to be the greatest thing since sliced bread, but it's free and better than zohospreadsheet with the real-time collaberation capabilities.

They've laid the groundwork, now all they need to do is add functions and toolbars. Open-source project you think?

I am continuing my own personal evaluation of Google spreadsheet. It is an interesting proposition. You give up big spreadsheets and rich well-groomed feature sets for quick and dirty. One early advantage for Google is its load speed. If I need to create a small spreadsheet quick, it could very well be that I can create it in Google before I could even get Excel launched.
