Homeland Security may tune into XM Radio?

An interesting Associated Press story at the Washington Post website outlines how the Mobile Enhanced Situational Awareness Network may get a dedicated XM channel that would be available to first responders and those needing information in an emergency. The satellite radio system apparently offers enough bandwidth to send maps and other imagery, which could be displayed on portable computers. The system might even be programmed to deliver specific messages to certain areas of the country only.
