You're not a Baptist until you have been dunked. The Spartanburg Herald Journal reports that 1,000 South Carolina Baptists in Columbia for their annual meeting affirmed that baptism by immersion as "uniquely the only biblical, historical and proper mode of Christian baptism."

I thought this was why they were called Baptists.

Even more interesting was that the South Carolina Baptists removed entire churches from their fellowship because they had accepted christians into their church who had not been dunked.

Did these other churches not know why they are called Baptists?

Having spent a fair number of my formative years in a Baptist Church, I can report that I successfully passed the dunking test in my youth. I can also speak with some authority when I say that this is exactly the kind of issue that will turn one Baptist Church into two.
